I just recieved an extremely glowing testimonial from a friend in Shanghai which I am going to reproduce below. Or at least I think he's currently in Shanghai...
Adding a comment for a special friend :)
I met Shilie back in 2005..
At first I thought he was a reservist, because of his highly distinguished look (his hair is like Richard Gere's). That's only one of his many amazing contradictions.
He calls himself idiot savant, but he can only identify with the 'savant' part. He's as far from an idiot as anyone I know.
He is what I would call, a true dichotomy, but one that the two halves would actually make whole. I think that in him, I realise that it is actually possible (for the luckier ones in the world) to have the best of both worlds.
Shilie could be the most accomplished criminal or the biggest philanthropist. That he has such capabilities was never in doubt.
But I don't care about that. What I do care is that I know Shilie has got my back if I'm in trouble, like a true friend. I count my blessings for joining CTC, where I met many people like him.
After that, I felt I just had to write something nice for him, hence my reply on his friendster page.
Mr Cheng here wrote me such a glowing testimonial that I just had to respond and write one equally spectacular. Failing which I would just crawl into a hole and hide...
Anyway, I first met NH in Sep 2005, in a SAF course and he was easily one of the most accomplished person on the course. He was fit, charismatic and a natural born leader - the ideal participant. More so than people like me who participted purely on account of our academic prowess.
Anyway, he's now away in China and working hard to earn many many times more than me. Nonetheless, he still bothers to listen to me rant online. He is a true friend whom I can rely on for advise or just to listen to my complaints.
Cya when you're back in SG... :)
And honestly, I don't think it's as flowery as what he wrote for me, but it is the best an engineer can do. But I was amazed that he actually put in all the effort to write something like that. Not many people would do so and I guess it's a measure of his friendship. He even had something to write about the testimonial I gave him.
Just so you know, all of us didnt feel that the scholars didnt deserve to be in the course.
If not for u guys, the course would be mundane, and the shot of creativity and clarity injected by BT, u and de'en, were the brightest spots in my time there.
I'm sure I'm not the only one that felt that way.
So stop saying that, you only got in cos of your academic prowess
Its like us saying that we got in because we were good in the jungle
Its exactly the same, and never say only!
However, this is where I disagree with him, though I didn't reply to him over msn. The fact of the matter is that we were on the course purely because we are scholars. The course should really be for those who are good in the jungle, not those who are good in their books. Whilst we may have brought an additional element into the course, the relation between scholars and leaders is not very clear. The course was more like an extended holiday, but I did learn quite a bit on the course and made quite a few new friends then...
