Helicopter views

Went back to camp yesterday for the 3rd last time of my NS life, managed to settle almost all my interview booklets as well as my clearance form. Whilst getting my clearance form signed by CO, he started chatting with us (me and De'en). He asked where we were posted to and commented on it. He was quite suprised that we both chose central ministries as our first posting and he didn't really have much to say about my posting in particular. He pointed out some of the issues with De'en's job such as integrating the inputs and making sure the system responds correctly. As for mine, he said the civil service would definately attract people no matter what the recruitment policy was. It was the matter of attracting the right sort of person that mattered. To counter that, I gave him my response to my 'interview' with PPD in which I said that policy makers have the most power to effect change on the country, a policy put out by a ministry will affect the lives of the populace, even one put out by PSD will affect the lives of the entire civil service. Hence the attractiveness of a civil service career, at most the private sector can influence one's clients and one's company. But he put me in my place by saying the truly talented would simply join MNCs and rise from there. Pay-wise is definately better than the public sector and at the top levels, their decisions can affect the economy of the entire region. No disagreements with him there, I must admit his helicopter view is higher and wider than mine, I at most see national level, he can see regional. I suppose that's why he's a SAFOS and a CO at that.

On another note, driving isn't proceeding well, turning aint all that good, reversing aint all that good, slow speed control aint all that good. Will definately need to book more lessons in order to complete the syllabus before I start work next month.
